A Rare Find: 30-Years-Owned 1993 Mazda RX-7 R-1 on Bring a Trailer
Currently featured on Bring a Trailer is a distinctive 1993 Mazda RX-7 R-1, notable for its long-term ownership and period-correct modifications. This particular car is one of only 350 US market examples produced for the model year that were finished in Competition Yellow Mica. It was initially sold in Florida and has remained registered in the state since being acquired by the current owner in 1995, meaning it has been under the same ownership for 30 years. The car is being offered on dealer consignment with a clean Carfax report and a Florida title in the seller's name.

This FD-generation RX-7 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 1.3-liter Wankel rotary engine. It is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and a Torsen limited-slip differential to send power to the rear wheels. The car shows 28k miles on its digital odometer, with approximately 6k miles added by the current owner over three decades.
As an R-1 Package car, it was originally equipped with features designed for enhanced performance. These included twin oil coolers, a front strut tower brace (which spans the engine bay), a front air dam (described as a front lip spoiler), front brake air ducts, and a rear spoiler. Other factory features include pop-up headlights, front fender vents, a power antenna, and a single exhaust outlet.

Over its 30 years with the current owner, this RX-7 has received several performance-enhancing modifications. The 1.3-liter Wankel engine, which features sequential twin turbochargers and twin oil coolers, has been upgraded with an aftermarket short-ram air intake, intercooler, and exhaust system. A high-performance ECU calibration was also installed as part of a Turn Key Terror (TKT) package from Pettit Racing of Oakland Park, Florida. A Pettit Racing Certificate of Authenticity for the TKT package is included in the sale.
The suspension has been significantly modified from the factory R-1 setup. It now features H&R lowering springs, GAB eight-way adjustable shocks, and Trak-Pro billet aluminum sway bars. The car rides on 16″ five-spoke wheels mounted with Goodyear Eagle GS-C tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with four-piston front calipers and front and rear cross-drilled rotors, with the brake fluid having been flushed recently in November 2024.
Recent maintenance in preparation for the sale included changing the engine oil and coolant, flushing the brake fluid, cleaning the fuel injectors, and replacing the battery. An invoice from November 2024 noted leaking from both turbochargers and the steering rack. Previous work in April 2021 involved repairing the engine wiring harness, cleaning fuel injectors, replacing the fuel tank, fuel pump hanger assembly, and two spark plugs, as well as replacing the clutch hydraulic cylinders.
The interior features twin high-backed bucket seats trimmed in black microsuede. Amenities include air conditioning and a factory cassette stereo. A boost gauge has been affixed to the steering column. The leather-wrapped airbag steering wheel frames a 180-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 7,500-rpm redline, and gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level.
Removed factory parts, a set of 19″ Tecnomagnesio wheels and Michelin tires, a period sales brochure, an owner’s manual, and service records are included with the sale.
The auction for this 1993 Mazda RX-7 R-1, listed by CarCaveSRQ in Osprey, Florida, is currently live on Bring a Trailer. The current bid stands at USD $50,000. The auction is scheduled to end on Friday, May 16, 2025.
